Addrsesa THE GLEANER, v f 4 Graham, N. C. acre of land will suffice to be gin, it is barct to believe. That comes of American extravagance. The farmers of Japan have built up on less than nineteen thousand square miles of arabale land, a tract of, say, half the size of Indiana, an agriculture which feeds forty -five million! Sometimes a smaller na tion may teach a larger, and we, who are learning the lesson of a lit tle land and liberty, may well study the garden of Japan. And it is not alone here that intensive agriculture has proved the richnes of our inher itance. The small farms on the is land of Jersey in the English Chan nel, about the size of Staten Island in New York Harbor, support sixty thousand inhabitants. A plot of two and one-half acres in Philadel phia yields in one season vegetables and flowers worth sixteen hundred dollars. No one has as yet reached the heights of intensive agriculture. Tbe usual yield of a vegetable garden is two or three cents per square foot, four cents being considered an ex ceptional yield. Yet I have known a vegetable garden, planted in May and abandoned in October, to yield eight cents a square foot, a sum which would undoubtedly have been larger had the garden been main tained during the entire season. With the ne wer and better under standing of chemistry and of the au. , 4 ly feeding of plants; there have devel oped possibilities within a small area that a few years ago would not have been dreamed of. There is a tiny, two-acre place in Pennsylvania that yields a comfort able living. Underneath the top soil is hollowed a cellar, in which are grown mushrooms. Early an d late vegetables form the main por tion of the produce; but to these grape vines have been added. The vines are supporled by trellises, in the early spring lettuce is grown on the ground Between, anu iu tuo uc summer when the leaves shade, vio lets are grown. From the total pro duce, mushrooms, vegetables.grapes and violets, is netted a sum large enough to insure independence. I 1 A .11 . 1 I. . I are quite the reverse.
